Important Update from Michigan State Bird Observatory – no spring bird banding
After many wonderful years of spring and fall banding and community engagement, the Burke Lake and Corey Marsh Banding Stations will not be open for the Spring 2026 season.
With Jen Owen’s transition to Archbold Biological Station, operations at Burke Lake Banding Station are currently in transition. If we are able to operate a Fall 2026 banding season, activities would take place at the Burke Lake Banding Station site and in collaboration with Mackinaw Straits Raptor Watch.
At this time, a fall season will depend on our ability to raise sufficient funds to support a full field crew, and therefore is not yet guaranteed.
Because Jen is no longer at Michigan State University, donations can no longer be directed through MSU. Instead, all funds to support Burke Lake Banding Station must be donated through Mackinaw Straits Raptor Watch. We will share the appropriate donation link here as soon as it becomes available. When donating, please indicate that your gift is designated for MSBO (Michigan State Bird Observatory).
If you would like more information or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out at MSBObirds@gmail.com.
We are incredibly grateful for the community of visitors, volunteers, and supporters who have made Burke Lake Banding Station what it is. Your continued support will determine whether we are able to carry this work forward.
Please check back for updates — we are hopeful to be back in the field this fall.
